Profile

The Department of Zoology started functioning in 1964 with classes for the erstwhile pre-degree biology students. Undergraduate programme was introduced in 1967 and later evolved into a post graduate department (M.Sc. Zoology -Structure, Physiology, Development and Classification of Animals) in 2021.

The department has a state-of-the art zoological museum with specimens, bones and fossils from different taxa of the animal kingdom. Since the inception of Kannur University our students were in the focus by securing ranks in the final year examinations, and after the grading system was introduced, our students always get high grades. The alumni of the department routinely get selected for post-graduate courses in top universities and spread the tradition of this department.

The department is supported by the DBT STAR college strengthening grant and has setup a microbiology laboratory and upgraded various instruments utilizing the support. Faculty members of the department has already completed two major research projects funded by KSCSTE (Govt. of Kerala) and UGC (Govt. of India). Members of the department also have collaborative research projects with other institutions and are part in research projects funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India and Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Govt. of Kerala.

Students of the department are active in various co-curricular activities at the college like NCC, NSS, various sports events and in arts and cultural activities. They are also involved in the college students’ union, which highlight their leadership qualities.
